Weatherization

Lower Your Energy Bills & Improve Your Home’s Comfort

Is your home drafty in the winter or too hot in the summer? UCC provides free energy-efficiency services to income-eligible households throughout Newark and Essex County. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and administered through the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, the program is designed to reduce household energy use, lower utility costs, and improve the overall comfort, health, and safety of residential homes.

Why Weatherization
Exists

Weatherization assists both owner-occupied and rental units and prioritizes households with seniors, individuals with disabilities, families with children, and residents experiencing high energy burdens.

Core Services

Following a comprehensive Whole-House Energy Audit, our team of professionals will identify and perform the specific upgrades your home needs. Services may include:

Reducing drafts and energy loss to keep conditioned air inside.

Adding insulation to attics, walls, and crawlspaces.

Professional evaluation, repair, or full replacement of inefficient units.

Combustion safety testing, carbon monoxide mitigation, and ventilation improvements.

Energy-efficient lighting and appliance improvements.

Who Qualifies for Assistance?

We serve both homeowners and renters throughout Essex County. While all income-eligible residents are encouraged to apply, we prioritize:

Seniors (Aged 60+)
Individuals with Disabilities
Families with Children
High Energy Burdens

(Households spending a large portion of income on utilities)

Cumulative
Impact

Weatherization significantly improved the living standards of Essex County residents last year by completing high-impact energy audits and retrofits in 112 homes.

By installing critical insulation, sealing air leaks, and upgrading inefficient heating systems, the department helped families reduce their monthly utility costs while enhancing indoor air quality and safety.
