UCC Serves Up Community Fun and Resources to 350-plus People at 5th Annual BBQ for a Cause

More than 350 community members were able to access great food and vital resources at UCC’s 5th Annual BBQ for a Cause Community Cookout.

The event, which was hosted at West Side Park Community Center on Aug. 1,  invited families and individuals across Greater Newark, bringing everyone together for a day of fun, connectivity and vital resources.

Attendees enjoyed free summer fare while accessing groceries, a bouncy house for children, and a range of local resources. Music was provided by DJ Alvarez.

“BBQ for a Cause was not only a cookout but a celebration of community and connection,” UCC Executive Director Craig Mainor said. “This event gave residents the opportunity to receive essential services in a welcoming environment. Whether you’re in need of groceries or just looking for a space to gather with neighbors, this is where community happens.”

Community events like BBQ for a Cause play an important role in building connections and support across neighborhoods. By bringing people together in one place to share a meal and access helpful services, UCC aimed to reduce isolation, build relationships, and ensure that all residents had access to the resources they need to thrive.

The event was made possible through the support of partners, including Wellpoint, Peapack Private, the Essex County Division of Family Assistance and Benefits, and Newark Centers of Hope. UCC also thanks Newark West Ward Councilman Dupré Kelly and his staff for their generous donation of burgers, hot dogs and buns for the event.
