UCC, in partnership with the Newark Police 4th Precinct, hosted a movie night Feb. 20 at the West Side Park Community Center, inviting members of the Greater Newark community to celebrate Black History Month with a screening of the film "The Six Triple Eight." The event honored the legacy of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion — the only all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas during World War II.
The evening brought together community members of all ages for a night of history, unity, and reflection. The film follows the story of nearly 900 women who faced both racial and gender discrimination while completing the critical mission of clearing a massive backlog of undelivered mail for American soldiers stationed in Europe.
Their dedication and resilience played a pivotal role in boosting troop morale and maintaining communication during the war — a contribution often overlooked in history books.
Attendees gathered to watch the inspiring portrayal of these unsung heroes, gaining a deeper understanding of their courage and the profound impact they made. The movie night served as both a tribute to the battalion’s legacy and a reminder of the contributions Black women have made throughout history.
