United Community Corporation (UCC), Newark’s Community Action Agency, wanted to ensure local youth go back to school this year well-equipped. The nonprofit hosted its annual “Backpacks and Snacks” distribution event August 23 at West Side Park in Newark, giving away more than 250 book bags to families. The event, designed to support local families as they prepare for the upcoming school year, provided backpacks and essential school supplies, snacks, free haircuts on-site, and more.

“We are thrilled with the turnout and success of this year’s ‘Backpacks and Snacks’ distribution,” said UCC Executive Director Craig Mainor.

“It is incredibly important for us to host these types of events before the school year begins, as they provide much-needed resources and support to our community members. By ensuring that children have the supplies they need and a fresh start, we are helping to set them up for success in the classroom.”

In addition to receiving backpacks and snacks, families also had the opportunity to connect with UCC staff and community resources to learn more about a wide range of programs, including educational support and financial assistance. Mainor also emphasized the broader impact of such events, noting that “they are about more than just giving away school supplies. They are about showing our community that they are supported and valued.”

The success of Backpacks and Snacks event was made possible through the generous support of Peapack-Gladstone Bank. The bank’s contribution ensured that each backpack was stocked with high-quality supplies that are essential for academic success, such as notebooks, pens, pencils, folders, and more. Additional partners and supporters included Wellpoint, Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, NDO Champ, DJ Alvarez, Community FoodBank of New Jersey, and the Newark Centers of Hope.
