United Community Corporation (UCC), Newark’s Community Action Agency, will commemorate its 60th anniversary in 2024 by reaffirming its commitment to creating equitable access to resources and opportunities for all greater Newark residents

Since its inception in 1964 to administer President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty,” UCC joined Community Action Agencies across the nation to implement transformative change while empowering individuals and families. Like many of these agencies, UCC, led by then-executive director Cyril deGrasse Tyson, was established amidst a backdrop of social change and civil rights movements in its home community of Newark, NJ.

Over the past six decades, UCC remained steadfast in its commitment to grassroots organizing and community empowerment and embarked on a mission to address the ever-evolving needs of greater Newark residents. This hard work and resilience helped lay the groundwork for lasting transformation.

Through the efforts of its staff, volunteers and stakeholders, UCC has not only strived to fill a specific need such as food or shelter but also provided resources and wraparound services to clients on their journey from dependency to self-sufficiency. The agency has consistently found new, innovative ways to address food insecurity in the community and implement programming for youth and adults to explore new education areas and take part in engaging activities. Each of the agency’s locations reflects its philosophy of treating everyone with the utmost respect and dignity.

“I am proud to see how our efforts in greater Newark resonate with this national movement,” said UCC Executive Director Craig Mainor. “Our dedication to assisting low-income, disadvantaged and at-risk individuals and families, including seniors and youth, mirrors the core objectives of Community Action Agencies.”

Today, UCC remains a staple community resource while empowering individuals and families to help them achieve their full potential. Community Action Agencies like UCC uphold their commitment to service and have brought about life-changing opportunities for countless people.
