UCC Partners with CHFiNS to Expand Equitable Food Access in Newark

UCC has taken a major step toward advancing food equity in Newark by recently signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Coalition for Healthy Food in Newark Schools (CHFiNS). Through this partnership, UCC will play a hands-on role in ensuring families across Newark have access to fresh, healthy, and culturally relevant food.

UCC's Role In Fresh Roots

As a designated Fresh Roots distribution site, UCC will:

  • Provide a safe, accessible location for bi-weekly produce box storage and distribution.
  • Maintain proper storage accommodations, including refrigeration, to preserve early deliveries or leftover produce.
  • Support ongoing coordination efforts to ensure efficient, dignified access for Newark families.

Each Fresh Roots produce box contains 10–12 pounds of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables, along with recipe cards and educational resources to help families make healthier choices. Beyond food access, the program emphasizes nutrition education and youth engagement, strengthening community health at its core.

By serving as both a storage hub and distribution site, UCC is ensuring that Newark families can access food with dignity, consistency, and care. This initiative reflects UCC’s broader mission to fight food insecurity and promote wellness throughout Greater Newark.

“UCC is proud to partner with CHFiNS and The Common Market to ensure Newark families have dignified access to fresh, healthy, and culturally relevant food,” said Craig Mainor, UCC Executive Director. “This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to fighting food insecurity and building a healthier, more equitable community for all."
